Winter Wellness
Now that the cold has well and truly set in, what can we do to keep our bodies happy and healthy?
Here are 5 tips on how to stay well in winter!
- Try and stay as active as possible
It’s so hard to get moving in winter as the cold is very deterring, but neglecting our bodies in winter will surely set us back and up for failure when hitting the summer months. Getting out into the fresh air whenever there is sun is a great opportunity to warm and keep fit- whether you are running, walking or jogging. Hitting a pilates, pump or aerobics class are all great ways to stay fit in winter.
- Include lots of warm soups into your diet
A great way to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need to stay well in winter is to cook up your favourite soup recipes! Including foods, spices and herbs such as ginger, garlic, parsley and cumin are excellent ways to keep sickness at bay and to keep the body fighting off disease. They contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties to build up your immune system. Soups are also a great way to keep warm and cosy on a cold winters night.
- Drink lots of tea
That’s herbal tea of course! Now days we have access to so many tasty and healing teas. Anything from lemon, ginger and manuka honey to Echinacea, tumerica and rooibos tea are available from all good health food stores and relatively inexpensive. Drinking herbal teas like these instead of just black tea or coffee will help keep you hydrated and free of the cold and flu!
- Keep up fermented foods
Keeping your gut healthy and clean will allow your body to heal from disease you may be susceptible to. That is; eating foods like kefir, sauerkraut and kombucha which are all high in beneficial bacteria that keeps your tummy happy and healthy. Most of your immune system is in your gut so keeping it functioning well is a must in order to fight infection.
- Why not try dry July?
Or if July doesn’t suit, pick a month to have free of alcohol. Dry July is not only for a good cause but will also keep your liver and bank account happy! Not drinking alcohol for a whole month does wonders for your bowel, liver, skin and gut function. It repairs cells and allows the body to concentrate on cleaning up other organs. Keeping a healthy digestive system and clean liver will keep you on track to staying fit and well in winter.
